Day 4 - Cranes and Donki

Friday 24th October

Before we go any further … that lovely day we had at the Shukkeien Garden has had a lasting affect …. Both Scott and I woke up this morning covered in bites…. He’s got a rather large one on his back and elbow and I have a fabulous one on my arm and a huge bite on my index finger which is sore and bloody irritating.

As I was completely unprepared for such injuries, I have no cream or lotions to ease the itching …. So a trip to the chemist was in order.  Fortunately - antihistamine is the same in English and Japanese ….. one lovely patient pharmacist and one tube of cream later and we are itching a bit less.

Anyway…. Back into Hiroshima today and a trip downtown.  I wanted to go to the Orizuru Tower.  This is a reasonably new building that overlooks the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Park.  There is a beautiful observation deck on the 12th floor which gave us amazing views of Hiroshima and is right next to the Atomic Dome so you can see inside it.  A few view shots ….. the white tents are the set up for the weekends food festival ……

The Atomic Dome

On the floor below called Orizuru Square, there is a small museum and a crane making studio …. You can make a crane and throw it in the window on the side of the tower….

I made two cranes …. Scott didn’t have the patience 😉 ….

We then dropped these two cranes into the window …. Standing on a glass floor … 12 stories up!  The lovely lady looking after us said there were about a million cranes already in the window and it’s about half full.  When it’s full, they will empty the window and recycle all the cranes and start again …. It’s amazing to see all those cranes in the window ….

There were a few interactive things to do …. You could be a crane flying through Hiroshima or make a crane using a screen.

There was also a 70m slide that you could zip down from the 12th floor down to the bottom …. But it was a thin twisty slide, you had to sign a disclaimer and wear an appropriate helmet …. Really? Nope - not playing on that … don’t need the Japanese fire brigade coming to rescue me out of a slide 😜 …. No-one needs to see that.

After wandering round the tower and avoiding the slide … we hit downtown Hiroshima and the shops …. I’ve been looking for a Don Quijote (Donki) to scope out some cheap supplies.  Donki has a shed load of stuff ranging from clothes, house stuff, a whole ‘pink’ floor full of every cartoon character merch, food, stationery and snacks … all the flavours of KitKats and Pockys.  It’s Japanese heaven.

We then ended up in a Daiso (pound shop) just to have a look round and we bought some cups because the cups in the house are tiny and we need a bit more caffeine to get us going on a morning ….

Back to the house to fill our new cups with caffeine and lather ourselves in what we hope is antihistamine cream!

We’re hitting the food festival tomorrow …. So no breakfast for me tomorrow.

Oyasumi nasai ❤️
