Saturday 25th October
Bite update ….. fingers is less swollen and a bit less itchy today ….the Antihistamine cream did its magic and we both feel a little less irritated today … yipeee!
There was only one thing on our minds today …. FOOD! We are hitting the Hiroshima food festival which is taking place round the castle grounds. There was just one plan of attack - find good food and scoff it.
We decided to take the tram to the castle today …. Hiroshima still has trams running through the city. There are some old ones and some sparkly new ones, however in my excitement I forgot to take photos of the trams …. I’ll try to get some later.
Food time….
The first part of the festival was by the football ground called the Edion Peace Wing and is the home of the Sanfreece football team. Apparently they are in the J1 league and are pretty good by all accounts.
The smells coming from the tents was amazing. This is just the opener and there were stalls selling all kinds of food …. Meat was a big hit as was fruit smoothies and shakes. But also lots of fish things, oysters was a bit hit … big queues for that one. It was really hard to take photos as some places had signs asking you not to take photos and other places we couldn’t get in close enough.
We made our way round to the castle grounds where the main part was based and it was absolutely heaving …. Soooo many people and stalls shouting their wares (well at least I think that was what they were doing).
I managed to snag myself some scran … first up - Dango. This is a Japanese dumpling made with Renault rice flour and glutinous rice flour smothered in syrup….. I found a spot to sit (on part of the castle ruins) and munched ….. I’d eaten the middle skewer before I took the photo - eek!
There were sooooo many beer and sake tents and most of them were giving samples out …. But again we definitely couldn’t get close to them.
I wanted Okonomiyaki - and there was a few stalls selling it, but I would have wanted to sit somewhere to eat it as it quite large and can be messy - going to look some where else for that.
Scott managed to snag a freebie, but it appeared to be a milk like substance with maybe miso in it …. Very weird …. Of all the freebies to get π³
I’m now on the hunt for something else and I spotted sweet potato wedges … get me in there …
I must point out that even though there were so many people and so many tents and food all over, there was absolutely no litter anywhere…. There were separate tents where you could drop off your rubbish and they would sort it into recycle and non-recyclable.
The only downside was the portable toilets …. They were squat toilets and I'm not playing that game - and definitely not in a Porto potty π³… however Scott remembered there were toilets by the Shrine and Castle. There’s nothing better than finding a clean public toilet that even has a heated seat …..ahhhhh
It’s now raining and being crammed in the middle of the festival with hundreds of people - who have now put up their brollies …. Is challenging. Time to escape.
On the way out we spotted the annual chrysanthemum exhibition…. But as you can see - no chrysanthemums π but I could tell it would be very pretty once the buds flower!
Oyasumi Nasai ❤️
Oh and I must remember - the clocks go back tonight so we will be 9 hours ahead from tomorrow …. Going to miss out on my extra hour in bed tonight πππ
